Ben Lyons Bio

Acting Vice Principal

Ben Lyons graduated in 2013 with a BA Joint Honours Degree in Economics and French from the University of Leeds.

Fresh out of University, Ben applied to be part of the TeachFirst Maths cohort for the Yorkshire and Humber region 2013 and was fortunate enough to be placed with Leeds West Academy. It was here that he completed his PGCSE and QTS whilst simultaneously teaching Mathematics. Since then, his roles and responsibilities have included Numeracy Coordinator, Lead Practitioner (Maths)and Advanced Skills Teacher (Maths)across the White Rose Academies Trust. In 2018, Ben was given the opportunity to increase his influence over the Maths department at LWA, as Curriculum Leader. In the subsequent two academic years, the Maths department set new benchmarks for the best results in Leeds West Academy history; with both progress and attainment now above or in-line with national averages.

Ben has a passion for data analysis and for using this to drive improvements, with both students and teaching professionals. It is therefore fitting, that in his new role as Associate Assistant Principal within the Quality of education Team, he will be responsible for student outcomes and futures, whilst continuing to oversee the Maths Department. The intention is that all students at Leeds West Academy experience inspirational lessons, receive timely and effective support, and ultimately, leave with results which reflect their true potential.

Having spent a number of years throughout his life living outside of the UK, Ben has a real affection for foreign language and culture. Aside from planning exciting holidays over the lengthy Summer break, he has also led two group expeditions to northern India, where he worked with Punjab Private Schools Organisation to improve the quality of teaching in some of the most remote and disadvantaged areas of the world.

Outside of school life, Ben is a keen sportsman and an avid cricketer; still making the journey back to his hometown of Doncaster every Saturday to play for his boyhood club - Sprotbrough CC.
