Katie Sandham qualified as an English teacher in 2008 and began teaching at the newly founded Leeds West Academy, having thoroughly enjoyed doing her training there.
Katie was part of the English team when significant improvements were being made, and after two years, became Learning Project Leader in the English Department. A year later, she also was given the additional responsibility of promoting English as a specialist subject at the Academy. During this time, the Academy was judged as good with outstanding leadership by Ofsted.
Katie then went on to become Foundation School Leader and implemented a number of new initiatives to improve behaviour, progress and attendance in Year 7 and 8. During this time, the new Project Curriculum was introduced a bounty whole school events such as The LWA Oscars and the Year 8 Showcase began. Katie continues to value and promote cross-curricular learning and the development of work-readiness skills such as resilience and independence.
After three years as Foundation School Leader, Katie secured Associate Assistant Head. Her first year in the role involved mentoring other School Leaders who were new in post, and during the second year, she was given the responsibility of Closing the Gap. Since then, Katie has become an Assistant Principal, and in addition to overseeing the provision for Pupil Premium students. Katie is now also responsible for ensuring the most able and SEN students make good progress and has been seconded to work as the Bramley Cluster Looked After Children Champion.
