Wonder Book Launch
New reading initiative for new starters
Leeds West Academy were delighted to welcome their new Year 7 cohort for transition day last week. During the day, students were treated to a book reading by Assistant Principal, Mrs Hanson, from R.J.Palacio’s acclaimed novel, ‘Wonder’ and introduced to their exciting summer project where all students will read the novel.
‘Wonder’ tells the story of August, a 10 year old boy with significant medical issues, as he starts school for the first time. The new starters were provided with a personal copy of the novel to keep and read over summer, which they will incorporate into all their lessons in the next academic year.
One student said ‘I’m most excited about learning how to describe the characters in Spanish’, whilst another reported that he really likes the idea that he would be creating a self-portrait in art, which will reflect who he is really is, not just what he looks like.
The project aims to provide students with a common theme across lessons as a starting point for their new term, as well as promoting that Leeds West Academy is ‘A Reading Academy’.
Since the launch, Year Manager, Mrs Gesinde, has visited many primary schools and has been thrilled to see so many students taking the book with them to read. We are sure they will find it a ‘Wonder-ful’ story!
Parents who attended the pre-transition evening were provided with guidance on how to support and further develop their child’s reading through the project. Copies of the parent and student leaflets can be found here:
