Engaging Music and Production Trips
Operating technical equipment and meeting drumming legend
Recently, students in the music department at Leeds West Academy have attended two very exciting educational trips; one to City Varieties Music Hall and the other was a masterclass led by drummer Ralph Rolle.
Miss Kurij and Miss Kistnen took students to the City Varieties Music Hall in Leeds as part of the Year 12 Production Arts (Technical Theatre) course.
During the trip, the students learnt about the history of the music hall, explored the auditorium and worked alongside the theatre technician, who taught the students about the lighting and sound in the venue. Students also had the chance to operate the high-spec equipment.
Catherine Hayward from the theatre was ‘delighted with how enthusiastic the students were about the theatre.’
At the beginning of the month, student drummers attend a masterclass by Ralph Rolle who is the drummer for Nile Rodgers and Chic. He also worked as a musician for hundreds of bands and artists such as Prince, Aretha Franklin and John Legend.
He has played at Glastonbury and Coachella and has nearly 40 years’ experience. The students were delighted to hear of his experience and take on his advice as well as watching him perform.
Miss Kurij said: “On both trips, the students behaved exceptionally and really engaged. The students were a credit to the academy.”
